A virtual link in [OSPF](/ospf) is created in order to connect a non-backbone OSPF area to the backbone area in cases where the non-backbone area is [not directly connected](/network-discontiguous) to the backbone via a single [ABR](/ospf-area-border-router-abr).  Some concepts to keep in mind:

* The virtual link is created between ABRs
* The virtual link connects the control plane only.  It does not carry user traffic.
