PoE powered device (PD)

PoE delivers DC electrical power over Ethernet cables to connected network devices. The device receiving and using that power is called the Powered Device or PD.

Examples of PDs include:

  • IP phones
  • wireless access points
  • IP cameras
  • Internet of Things devices
  • Point of Sale (PoS) devices
  • Small routers or switches
  • In some cases, TVs or laptops

The PD will connect to the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) to receive power. A PD and PSE will either negotiate the power requirements using standards-based PoE or "Active" PoE, or it will receive whatever power is delivered using Passive PoE.
