
When applying [QoS](/qos) features such as [policing](/qos-traffic-policing) and [shaping](/qos-traffic-shaping), on Cisco devices, the concept of tokens and buckets are used to implementing each mechanism.  However, the token represents something different in each case.

For policing, one token represents a single byte of data while for shaping, each token represents a single bit of data.
