
IP Event Dampening is a mechanism that can be configured on a Cisco router to help identify and dampen the effects that excessive interface [flapping](/network-flapping) has on [routing](/routing) protocols and [routing tables](/routing-table) in the network.  

This feature allows the network operator to configure a router to automatically identify and selectively dampen a local interface that is flapping.
