SD-WAN


cEdge is the term used to refer to edge routers of a Cisco [SD-WAN](/sd-wan) implementation.  They are the same type of entity as the [vEdge](/sd-wan-vedge) but they run an IOS XE SD-WAN software image as opposed to a Viptela operating system (ViptelaOS).

Like vEdge routers, cEdge routers connect to an [vSmart](/sd-wan-vsmart) controller through a Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) connection. The typical cEdge hardware used includes Cisco ISR and ASR platforms using the IOS XE SD-WAN software image
