DHCPv6 - Modes of Operation
In IPv6 networking, there are three primary modes involving stateful, stateless, and DHCPv6 configurations:
-
Stateful DHCPv6: This mode uses DHCPv6 to assign an IPv6 address to a host along with other network parameters such as DNS server, NTP server, and SIP server.
-
Stateless DHCPv6: In this mode, the IPv6 address is assigned to the host using Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC), not DHCPv6. However, the host still uses DHCPv6 to obtain additional network parameters.
-
SLAAC (Stateless Autoconfiguration): No DHCPv6 server is involved. The router on the local subnet provides the host with its IPv6 address and default gateway.
It is important to note that in none of these modes does the DHCPv6 server provide a default gateway. The default gateway is always provided by the local router on the network segment.
