Session Initiation Protocol

Session Initiation Protocol or SIP is a signaling protocol that is used to initiate, maintain, and terminate real-time voice and video sessions. It is often used with VoIP applications. SIP does not carry any voice or video payload, but is responsible only for signaling. Voice and video payload is carried typically by the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).
