HSRP Message Parameters

Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) is a first hope redundancy protocol used for establishing a fault-tolerant default gateway. HSRP devices communicate using UDP packets with a source port of 1985. These devices exchange messages via the multicast address 224.0.0.2 with a TTL of 1, allowing them to coordinate with each other.

There are various types of HSRP messages that are exchanged. Each has a particular purpose and is defined defined using HSRP HSRP Message Op Codes.
