Multicast local subnetwork address range

The local subnetwork address range of the Multicast IPv4 address space is defined as 224.0.0.0/24. This range is designated for multicast on the local subnet only. This range is not routable, that is, routers will not forward these messages outside the subnet from which they originate.

There are several addresses in this range which are reserved for specific purposes, including:

  • 224.0.0.5 - OSPF all routers address
  • 224.0.0.6 - OSPF all DR address
  • 224.0.0.9 - RIP version 2 all routers address
  • 224.0.0.10 - EIGRP all routers address
