
It is possible to run a [routing protocol](/routing-dynamic-routing-protocols) such as [OSPF](/ospf) on the [overlay network](/networks-overlay-network) of a [VXLAN](/vxlan) topology.  When running OSPF over a VXLAN Layer 2 VNI, it's important to note that OSPF [hello packets](/ospf-hello-packets-unicast-and-multicast) are sent as [multicast](/multicast) traffic, even when using [point-to-point network type](/ospf-network-types). If the same L2 VNI is configured across multiple [leaf switches](/network-design-spine-and-leaf-architecture), all switches will receive these OSPF hello packets, which could lead to unintended neighbor relationships. This behavior needs to be considered when designing OSPF over VXLAN networks.
