VLAN SVI status

When you create a switched virtual interface (SVI), it will display various operational statuses depending upon the parameters of the VLAN in which it has been created. Specifically:

  • When an SVI's VLAN is not assigned to any access ports, and is not allowed on any trunks, the line protocol will be down.
  • When an SVI exists but its VLAN does not exist both the status and line protocol will be down.
  • When an SVI exists and it’s VLAN exists, and the VLAN is assigned to at least one access port or is allowed on at least one trunk, the status and line protocol will be up.
  • If an SVI's line protocol and status are up, and its VLAN is deleted, then the status will remain up, but the line protocol will be down. Only after the SVI is shutdown and brought back up will both the status and line protocol be down.
